In 2015, animal welfare organizations in our region achieved zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable shelter pets -- a commitment we have met for the past seven consecutive years.
Our goal is to use the knowledge we have gained in this time to help other communities in California reduce euthanasia of healthy and treatable shelter animals by increasing their capacity to perform spay/neuter.
Under general guidance from the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Shelter Spay/Neuter Consult Manager will lead San Diego Humane Society's Shelter Spay/Neuter Consult program by partnering with shelters throughout California to provide spay/neuter procedures for in-care animals to under-resourced shelters and to provide training on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter for veterinary staff at partner shelters.
This position supports our mission by building a strong internal infrastructure that can sustain an increase in spay/neuter capacity in the long term.

Partner with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in building the Shelter Spay/Neuter Consult program, including creation of SOPs, hiring plan and helping with hiring the medical team, and creating a network of shelters in California that need assistance.
Identify and cultivate relationships with animal welfare and rescue organizations within California that would benefit from program services.
Act as the liaison and main point of contact between partner shelters and SDHS.
Coordinates shelters in California that need spay/neuter services and handles all logistics including but not limited to scheduling medical staff for the consult and coordinating travel and lodging.
Meet grant funding goals, ensuring surgical team travels to other shelter sites a minimum of 20 weeks per year and three days per week (total of 60 days per year minimum).
Surgical team should be prepared to perform 60-90 surgeries per trip, with a minimum goal of 1,200-1,800 surgeries per year.
Assists the CMO in developing a spay/neuter training manual for shelters to be used by the surgical training team and given to the partner shelter for on-going use.
Assists the CMO in preparing the annual budget for the program and ensures that expenses are maintained within budgetary guidelines.
What we're looking for:
Requires bachelor's degree in related field and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in program management or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Previous experience working in an animal shelter or in the veterinary field is highly preferred.
Must have valid driver's license and ability to be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
Location:
Based at our San Diego campus, with expected travel between campuses and in the field.
Pay:
The starting range is $64,480 - $72,540 per year.
The actual salary is determined by your related education and experience.
