DESCRIPTIONAt the Human Milk Institute (HMI), we bring organizations at the forefront of human milk research, clinical care, milk banking, education, and public and global health together to expand our understanding of human milk so we can apply that knowledge and improve lifelong health worldwide.
Our mission is to transform the approach to lifelong health for all people through human milk.
We will pursue our mission through close collaboration with our partners and holding fast to our core values.
We envision a future where human milk is the first and critical foundation for human life and equitable access to better health for the global community.
We are laying the foundation for achieving this vision by establishing a world-class institute and creating a sustainable model for ongoing research into human milk.
The world is facing new and severe global health threats, growing inequities across society and environmental crises.
Our purpose at HMI is to accelerate our understanding of human milk and apply that knowledge to improve lifelong health worldwide.
Human milk has been historically viewed as solely infant nutrition.
This perspective created a data and research deficit that has had a lasting impact on the lifelong health of everyone on earth.
At HMI, we rely on a firm commitment to evidence-based data to reveal what human milk holds for us, from infant development and understanding the effects of medications on milk composition to providing equitable access to milk, educating clinicians and so much more.
HMI programs are recognized leaders in studying and advancing access to human milk.
These programs and the amazing people behind them intersect at HMI, creating a one-of-kind organization that serves as a resource for reliable data, expertise, and human milk.
Key HMI pillars are the Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence (MOMI CORE), Mommys Milk Human Milk Research Biorepository, the UC San Diego MPRINT Center of Excellence in Therapeutics, the UC Health Milk Bank, and the Supporting Premature Infant Nutrition (SPIN) Program and Premature Infant Nutrition Clinic (PINC).
To accomplish HMIs mission, vision, and goals, we need outstanding and creative leadership and an organizational structure that favors innovative thinking, collaboration, and open communication between the pillars and silos at our large organization.
