Addiction Therapist

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:
Providing direct, individual, and group counseling services to patients and as indicated, their families/loved ones. Observing patient behaviors and reaction patterns for use by higher-level professionals or the multidisciplinary treatment team in reviewing and modifying treatment and/or follow-up plans. Participating in the assessment/screening process by interviewing patients and, if indicated their families, once assessment completed the staff present their findings at the multidisciplinary treatment team. Providing crisis intervention, stabilization, and follow-up as needed. Handling other emergency situations, as they arise, independently often without specific instructions. Administering screening tools specific to program as appropriate to professional competencies, observing and recording patient statements and reactions and recommending appropriate treatment modalities. Preparing written assessments based on knowledge of each patient's background and/or medical history for use by members of the multidisciplinary treatment team and/or the therapist's use in developing the appropriate treatment process. Conducting educational classes for SUD patient population, utilizing a variety of techniques, formats and media, including lecture, discussion, experiential, and audio/video presentations on a telehealth platform. Training or orienting other therapists and medical personnel in intervention techniques, crisis-oriented counseling, and other related subjects. Conducting family education classes on substance addictions. These classes may be held on evenings and/or weekends. Acting as a liaison/resource person to public and private agencies and community resources to assure continuity of patient care and appropriate referrals for the patient and his/her family. Arranging referral of patients to other Federal agencies, State, and other public as well as private organizations and giving advice and guidance to patients relative to benefits and services provided within the VA and the local community, along with eligibility requirements. Providing follow-up evaluations of patients to determine whether Veterans have received all appropriate services and provides any additional services or referrals required. Functioning as treatment coordinator for patients, developing treatment plans and follow- up plans for each assigned patient, with input from the treatment team. Contributing to the development of program policy and procedures. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS 9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS 7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
receiving patients, administering screening tools, conducting education to patients and other staff, preparing written assessments. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond a Bachelors degree. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation. Physical Requirements:
Work involves primarily an office or lecture room setting, but also involves some walking and travel .in the community and to other communities. Work involves considerable reading, writing, and talking. The incumbent may occasionally be required to assist with physical patient management/control. The incumbent will participate to the extent that health and abilities will allow. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
